This memorial museum was established to spread the word of Aizu Yaichi, a prominent man of culture born in Niigata Prefecture, to as many people as possible.
Echigo (former name of Niigata Prefecture) is renowned for producing a large number of great people since ancient times. Aizu Yaichi was one of these, and not only was he known for being a noble artist and passionate educator, he was also a scientist with a severely critical mind.
Visitors to the museum will get the chance to meet up with Yaichi and chat to him. I hope that in addition to observing the words, thoughts and formative art that Yaichi left behind for us, they will also come into contact with them in person and gain insight into Aizu Yaichi, the man whose personality is deeply engraved upon them.
If visitors wish to engage these pieces in conversation, then I’m sure each of them in turn will reply to shine a light on the passion, anxieties, resistance, depth of contemplation and prayers that drove Yaichi for so many years.
